Why is an interview thank you letter so important?
If you said it’s because it’s polite and show’s you’re keen on the job, I want you to go outside and sit on the naughty step. Go on.
Just kidding 😉 I’m glad you’ve stayed. Have you been working out, by the way? You look great.
Interview thank you notes are an excellent opportunity to further persuade your interviewer that you’re the right person for the job.
And there’s a really important reason why I’ve pointed out this difference.
Lots of books and websites will give you sample interview thank you notes with the intent of showing that you’re keen, with the intent of being formal, and with the intent of reminding interviewers of some of your better qualities.
“Thank you so much for the opportunity to meet with you. I have found you and the company to be very professional and…”
“I am convinced that I am the most suitable person for the job because I am…”
In other words, really boring interview thank you notes which make your interviewer think nothing more than, “Oh look, an interview thank you letter. That’s nice of them.”
What else do you notice about these interview thank you notes? It’s all me, me, me, me, me.
“I have found you and the company to be very professional and…”
Interviewer’s thoughts: “That’s nice.”
“I am convinced that I am the most suitable person because…”
Interviewer’s thoughts: “Lol, you’re convinced? That’s nice to know. And all those other reasons – you told me them just yesterday. I don’t have amnesia.”
Instead of glazing your interviewer over with boredom, wouldn’t you rather change the way they think about you? Wouldn’t you rather lead them to think that you’re perfect?
Of course you would. And you can, using persuasion techniques.

Thank you for the opportunity to meet and discuss my suitability for the role. Based on the conversation we had together I hope you, like me, can look out into the future 6 months from now and already see how well suited I am to (deliver the results we talked about). From using my skills in (x) to deliver (y for you), my experience in (a) to accomplish (b for you), and my proven track record in (u) to add value to (v for you).
Wouldn’t it be great if by the end of the year, you have successfully (accomplished the aim of the role), and it all started from the conversation we’ve just had?
I look forward to hearing from you soon,
Actually, that was an unfair question because there are lots of differences. Maybe I should be the one on the naughty step? 😉
I’ll tell you what. If you let me stay, I’ll explain how this interview thank you letter will leave such a huge impression on your interviewer. Does that sound fair to you?
There are a few different persuasion techniques here; the most important is a ‘future paced bind’.
“Based on the conversation we had together I hope you, like me, can look out into the future 6 months from now and already see how well suited I am to (deliver the results we talked about).”
In their mind, I’ve tied the thought of your interview to the thought that you’re perfectly suited. And led them to think as if it’s already true.
I’ve extended this idea here:
“From using my skills in (x) to deliver (y for you)”
Where I’ve tied one of your skills to one of the specific outcomes they really want to see, and have directed them to think like it’s already been achieved.
And its last use is here:
“Wouldn’t it be good if by the end of the year, you have successfully (accomplished the aim of the role), and it all started from the conversation we’ve just had?”
Another persuasion tactic is the ’embedded command’:
“Based on the conversation we’ve had together I hope you, like me, can look out…”
You like me. Do you think they’ll pick the candidate they like the most? Of course they will.
Wow, a densely packed letter, don’t you think?
I’m sure you realise the advantage you’ll get by using this letter instead of other watered-down interview thank you notes.
And I’m also sure you can see the benefits persuasion techniques give you over every other candidate.
